Donostia - San Sebastian

San Sebastian, in the Basque language called Donostia, is one of the top sights in northern Spain. Overrun by tourists in the summer, still well visited out of season and just as attractive. My room was in the historical centre. Pintxos bars all around, the beach on one side, the mouth of the river on the other. Behind the hotel a high mountain, which I often walked around during my evening walk. Even in calm weather, high waves pile up here, which is wonderful and calming to watch. On the other side of the bay there is a high mountain with an amusement park that can be reached via a cable car. The view from up here is magnificent! Even if it was still too cold for bathing, you can spend your time here. San Sebastian is a big and versatile city. The underground bus station is central and only a few minutes walk from the hotel. From here you can reach many other cities in the area in a short time. Since the sun wasn't always shining, I used the bad days for trips into the surroundings.

Pamplona

What to do if the weather doesn't play along? You go on a trip. Pamplona lies 80 km inland and is famous for the annual bull run in July. Pamplona itself is not a beautiful city. It looks like an industrial city that was quickly built out of the ground. But the historical city centre is interesting. The houses are well preserved and appear in bright colours. Fortunately for me a bull run took place on this day. Completely unexpected. Unfortunately one sees the bulls only if one can look from a balcony on the street. At the edge of the historic town core of Pamplona, one sees well preserved remains of the former fortress that was built in the 16th century to protect it from the French.

Biarritz

Bad weather was forecasted for Donostia, sunshine for Biarritz, which is only an hour away by bus. I didn't have to think long and went to the bus terminal in the morning. Biarritz is a classy seaside resort on the French Bay of Biscay, also known in the motorcycle scene for the Wheels and Waves Festival, which has been taking place here for a few years now. Wheels and Waves, a meeting place for motorcycle tuners who show their latest cafe-racers here. The place itself is beautiful but small, what impresses here is the beach with the many rocks and the beautiful houses on the cliffs. This trip was worth it!
